First thing we read about the Armenian geography is that it’s a mountainous country. Mountainous ranges comprise the 47% of the whole territory of the country. The highest mountain of the Republic is Aragats. It is also the highest among the mountains of Transcaucasia. Aragats has a volcanic origin, with 4 peaks which rise above around its 350 m. depth and 3 km wide crater. The highest peak is the northern: 4090m., and the Southern is the lowest with 3887m of height. The surmounting of the southern peak is one of the easiest, but if you want to climb the northern one, you will need a better preparation, because it is more vertical. Aragats is famous for its dozens of picturesque ponds, among those the most famous is the lake “QARI” (Stone lake). The lake is on the 3200 m. height and this is from where the hiking tours are usually being started. The best period for climbing is from July to August months, but if you are a skilled mountaineer, you can enjoy the peak of Aragats during other seasons as well.

Next is Azhdahak which is the highest peak of Gegham mountains. It is of volcanic origin and has an elevation of 3597m above sea. There is a crater lake of a special beauty in the crater of Azhdahak. In order to organize the hiking of the mountain within a day, they pass the beginning of the road with trucks which in its turn makes the trip more enjoyable. The overall hiking takes 6-8 hours even if you are not a skilled climber.

One of the highest peaks of the Meghri Ridge is Khustup which is of 3201 meters height. Tours to Khustup in Armenia are one of the favorites. Usually it takes 2 days to overcome this height especially if the journey starts from the capital. Unforgettable moments start from the overnight organized in tents and continues until the moment you are on the top. No one can be indifferent to the magic nature of the Syunik world. Serious physical preparedness is not a must to hike this mountain.

Mountain Mets Ishkanasar is the highest peak of the massif of Ishkhanasar with 3550m of height. There is a volcanic crater on the top and from there a beautiful view opens to the Black Lake of glacial origin on the eastern slope. Hiking Ishkhanasar is a little bit difficult but if you have already got over the other ridges, probably you are already physically quite ready for this ascent.
