During this tour, we will visit Smbataberd, which is one of the old and large castles of Vayots Dzor and Syunik. It’s about the bloody battle (Avarayr battle) between Armenians and Persians at the fortress. The princes of Syunik Vasakians probably made Smbataberd their military stronghold. And during the reign of the Orbelians, Smbataberd became even stronger. After the hike, we will also visit the Tsakhats Qar monastery. This medieval monastery complex is located 6 km north of the village of Yeghegis in the Vayots Dzor region.
After hiking we will visit the Zorats Church (Surb Astvatsatsin). It is located on a hill and was founded by the Orbelians. This building has a unique architectural structure. Thanks to this structure, soldiers could approach the altar, riding a horse, to receive a blessing before the battle.
P.S. Please note that we are expecting a 6 km long medium-difficulty hike. Participants are advised to wear sneakers, comfortable shoes, warm clothes, wear a protective cap, and have the necessary food and water for the day.
