The church of the Holy Mother of God of Vanadzor was founded in 1831 by Piluman Tairyan. According the khachkars, that are located in the church yard, it is supposed that there was another church here, but, unfortunately, it is not known exactly when it was built. In 1826, a great earthquake occurred in Gharakilisa, during which the ancient church was destroyed. However, Piluman Tairyan used the stones of the old church to build a new one.

Facts

When building the new church, imported orange-colored stone was used. In addition, the surviving black stones from the old building were also used. Therefore, today the walls of the building are two-colored, with a bizarre black and orange ornament laid out on them.

The church has already been completely renovated in our days. Several miniature masters were involved in the interior design. The facade of the building was restored, as well as the domed cross. In 2014, the Church of the Holy Mother of God received three bells as a gift, the ringing of which can now be heard throughout Vanadzor.
