Dorbandavank is one of the original and valuable examples of early medieval Armenian architecture preserved in the Lori region. It belongs to the series of monuments built within the Gugark architectural school and is located about 3 km northeast of the village of Sverdlov. Although there are no surviving historical or literary sources about the monastery, a detailed analysis of its architectural structure and ornamentation allows scholars to date it to the first half of the 6th century. The Church of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin) is built in a domed, cruciform plan with a triple apse, yet it features a unique layout. The sacristies on both sides of the eastern apse are rectangular in plan, and the niches are framed with domed arches. Unlike the others, the western apse ends with a semicylindrical vault. The structure has two entrances — from the south and west. Dorbandavank is built of large, finely hewn yellow-green felsite stones, some combined with black tuff. The decorative elements are typical of 6th-century architecture: horseshoe-shaped arcades, cornices, and double-row dentil patterns around the windows, all carved with fine craftsmanship. The church was renovated in the 1980s, which helped preserve its structural integrity.
