"Tanahat Monastery, also known as Karmir Monastery, was founded in the 8th century on the site of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Anahit. The monastery's name derives from the reddish stones used in its construction, creating an impression that at sunset, the monastery blends with the natural colors of its surroundings. During the Middle Ages, Tanahat Monastery was not only a spiritual center but also an important cultural center. In the 13th century, under the patronage of the Proshyan princely dynasty, the Church of St. Stephen was built from dark bluish basalt, maintaining its majestic appearance to this day. On the outer walls of the church, one can see the high relief of the “Clawing Eagle” with outstretched wings, a common motif found in monastic complexes of the Vayots Dzor region. Particularly fascinating is the sundial on the southern wall of the church, decorated with delicate images of peacocks, which testifies to the high level of architectural thinking of medieval Armenian masters. Above the church's entrance, a hunting scene is carved in stone, depicting a horseman spearing a lion, providing rare insight into monastic life in the Middle Ages, illustrating both religious and secular themes. Today, Tanahat Monastery remains well-preserved, continuing to amaze visitors with its grandeur, mystery, and historical significance. It is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a unique atmosphere. Every visitor who walks along the monastery’s stone paths seems to be traveling through time to the past, where the breath of Armenia’s medieval glory continues to be felt."
