Horomayr monastery was first mentioned in the 7th century. It consists of two groups of buildings and was built on the cliffs. To get to the site, the visitor may climb up from the highway along the Debed River, or hike south across the cliffs from Odzun. The fastest route is to climb down the cliff south of Odzun.
The well-established transport infrastructure of Armenia allows to get to Horomayr Мonastery by a private car or with the help of various travel companies which offer regular excursions and tours to different sights of the country. Due to the geographical location of Horomayr Мonastery the trip will not seem long.
The high season in Armenia lasts for a long time due to the pleasant climate conditions. Warm days in Armenia start in March and last until late autumn; winter is usually snowless and not long. A part of the road leading to Horomayr monastery was blown up in Soviet times, to block the way into the gorge, so that the harvest of locals would remain untouched.
According to the legend, the Greek Prince, who fought against the Armenians, fell ill and was cured only due to Hovhannes Odznetsi's prayers. After this "miracle”, the prince withdrew his troops and founded a monastery here in the 8th century.
