10 PLACES TO SEE IN STEPANAVANUM AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

Stepanavan is located in the northern part of Armenia, in Lorva Marz. Once upon a time, caravan routes passed through this area. Due to its climatic conditions, the city is one of the health resorts of Armenia. In the vicinity there are dense pine forests, where substances are produced that are extremely invigorating for people suffering from diseases of the respiratory tract. Fortress of Lori

The ruins of the medieval Lori settlement are located 4 km from Stepanavan. It was once the "heart" of the Lori kingdom. The settlement was located at the intersection of the Dzoraget and Urut canyons. The impregnable Lori fortress was built here, the defensive wall of which stretches 200 m. Today, you can see here only the ruins of once magnificent city structures.

Ancient bridge

Not far from the fortress of Lori you can see the ancient bridge located on the Urut River. The bridge has an arched structure. It perfectly complements the surrounding luxurious nature.

Ancient monastery complex

Hnevank is located on the right bank of Dzoraget, about 40 km from Stepanavan city. Hnevank is an architectural and historical monument of Lorva marz, which dates back to the early Middle Ages. The monastery was founded in the 6th century, and in the 12th century. it has been restored and partially rebuilt. The monastery complex consists of three churches, a vestibule, and auxiliary buildings.

Arboretum of Stepanavan

Sochut Arboretum, located about 10 km from Stepanavan, is a great place to relax with family or friends. Sochut is the first arboretum in Armenia. A large number of different types of trees and shrubs are grown here, some of which were brought from different corners of the world. Not far from the Arboretum is the "Sochut" sanatorium, which gives you the opportunity to relax and fully enjoy the healing air of the Stepanavan forests.

Communist caves

This is the name of a beautiful place located here. The place got such an unusual name because, according to the locals, it was here that the first communists of Armenia, led by Stepan Shumumyan, hid from the royal soldiers. However, it is worth visiting the "Caves of the Communists" for the beautiful natural scenery.

Canyon expert

A powerful and abundant mountain river flows through a beautiful deep gorge. This place is considered a natural wonder of Lori region. Dzoraget Gorge is sometimes considered one of the most beautiful canyons in Armenia.

Stepanos Shahumyan's House-Museum

In Soviet times, the house-museum located in the central square was considered one of the main attractions of the city. It is believed that Shahumyan organized the first Marxist club in Armenia here in 1899. In the post-Soviet period, the house-museum was partially transformed into a history museum. Now it is preserved as a historical building.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and Amrakit village

The Russian church is located in Amrakit village near Stepanavan. St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Church was founded in 1846 and rebuilt in the early 1900s. The church building is an excellent example of modern architecture. The fortress is a historical area where you can see preserved historical objects from ancient times and the Middle Ages. Cemeteries and church buildings of the 13th-18th centuries are located here. There are also tombs dating back to BC. from the first millennium. Later, the village of Nikolaevka was established near this area, which became famous thanks to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Saint Sargis Church, Stepanavan

The small church of Saint Sargis is a relatively recently built architectural monument. The church was built in the 19th century. It differs from the Armenian churches of the middle and late medieval period in its overall appearance and interior decoration.
