"Arates monastic complex, consisting of two churches, two narthexes, and five chapels, is considered one of the finest examples of Armenian architecture. It holds not only religious but also great cultural value, reflecting the architectural traditions and developmental stages of medieval Armenia. The oldest church of the monastery, Saint Sion, was built in the 10th century, while the second church, Holy Mother of God, dates back to the 11th century. The complex was once surrounded by a strong defensive wall, but by the 17th century, most of it had been destroyed, leaving only the northern section intact. This monastery has played a significant role in both spiritual and cultural life, serving as a center for pilgrimage and education for centuries."
