"Smbataberd Fortress was built to protect Vayots Dzor from various invasions and, due to its strategic location, served as an important defensive stronghold. Being located on a high hill, Smbataberd safeguarded the surrounding areas and prevented enemies from easily entering the Yeghegis Gorge. The fortress structure is impressive, surrounded by thick and strong walls, designed to withstand a prolonged siege. One of its greatest tactical advantages was its water supply system—it is believed that the fortress was connected to nearby springs through hidden aqueducts, allowing its inhabitants to survive a long siege without a water shortage. Smbataberd held great historical significance, especially during the Zakarian rule, when it functioned as a military fortress. In the Middle Ages, it was attacked many times, but thanks to its strong defense system, it was able to withstand many enemies. Today, Smbataberd remains one of Armenia’s important historical and cultural heritage sites. It is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts, offering stunning views of the Vayots Dzor mountains and Yeghegis Gorge. Though now in ruins, the fortress still preserves its former glory and strength, standing as a testament to medieval Armenian military architecture."
