Republic Square is the main square of Yerevan, designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1924 master plan of the city. It serves as a major urban and transportation hub, as well as a venue for various events and gatherings. The square features the singing fountains, two major museums—the History Museum of Armenia and the National Gallery, along with government buildings constructed between the 1920s and 1950s, the Central Post Office of Armenia, and the Marriott Hotel. The Republic Square complex is considered one of the finest examples of Soviet-era architecture, earning the State Prize of the Armenian SSR in 1971.

At the center of the square, there is a large stone mosaic that, when viewed from above, resembles a traditional Armenian carpet.

The architectural style of Republic Square was heavily influenced by the design of the First Government Building, which determined the proportions, heights, and relationships of the surrounding structures.

In front of the museum buildings, there is the “Yotnaghbyur” (Seven Springs) drinking fountain, built in 1965 by architect Spartak Kntekhcyan. It was renovated in 2010 by sculptor Nur. More than just a fountain, it also functions as a sundial, with a compass in the center marking the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west.

The ornamental details of the square, including the cornices, friezes, arches, and other decorative elements, incorporate motifs from Armenian architecture, inspired by historical sites such as Tekor, Dvin, Zvartnots, and Talin."
