Vorotnavank was founded in 1000. By Queen Shahandukht of Syunyat, who was the grandmother of Gagik A Bagratun's wife Katramide, mother of Syunyat kings Vasak A and wife of Smbat A. It is located about 14 km east of Sisian, on the left-hand side of Vorotan Gorge. Previously, there was a Christian place of worship at the place of Vorotnavank. The great medieval Armenian philosopher Hovhan Vorotnetsi (1315-1388) carried out a rich scientific and ecclesiastical activity in Vorotnavank. He created close ties between Vorotnavank and Tatev, founding Tatev University. During the invasions of Lenk-Temur, the monastery was destroyed again, being surrounded by Turkic villages.

Grigor Tatevatsi worked in Vorotnavank, who in 1386 copied here the "Book of Seven Virtues" by Petros of Aragon.
