Vorotnavank was founded in 1000. By Queen Shahandukht of Syunyat, who was the grandmother of Gagik A Bagratun's wife Katramide, mother of Syunyat kings Vasak A and wife of Smbat A. The great medieval Armenian philosopher Hovhan Vorotnetsi (1315-1388) carried out a rich scientific and ecclesiastical activity in Vorotnavank. He created close ties between Vorotnavank and Tatev, founding Tatev University. During the invasions of Lenk-Temur, the monastery was destroyed again, being surrounded by Turkic villages.
