The monument “We and Our Mountains”, or as the locals name it “Grandmother and Grandfather” (“Tatik ev Papik” in Armenian), is made of tufa stone. It presents an elderly couple in folk clothes. The monument is the symbol of Stepanakert city, as well as the whole Artsakh, and is located at the entrance to Stepanakert on the high hill. It was erected in 1967. The sculptor is Sargis Baghdasaryan and the architect is Yuri Hakobyan.
The well-established transport infrastructure of Armenia allows to get to "We and Our Mountains" monument by a private car or with the help of various travel companies which offer regular excursions and tours to different sights of the country. Due to the geographical location of "We and Our Mountains" monument the trip will not seem long.
The high season in Armenia lasts for a long time due to the pleasant climate conditions. Warm days in Armenia start in March and last until late autumn; winter is usually snowless and not long. The high precipitation season is variable. The tourist season for "We and Our Mountains" monument depends on the weather conditions.
By design of the author - the national artist and the sculptor of the Armenian SSR Sargis Baghdasaryan, the absence of a pedestal in the composition creates the feeling that the figures seem to have grown into the mountains. It was reported in newspaper “Pravda” (1976), that the monument “We are our mountains” became “the first monument in the world built in honor of the long-livers”.
