The Cascade Complex project was originally included in the 1924 master plan for Soviet Yerevan. Architect Alexander Tamanyan envisioned the Cascade as a way to connect Yerevan’s central and northern districts. However, the project was brought to life decades later, in the 1970s, under Yerevan’s chief architect Jim Torosyan, and later, between 2002 and 2009, it was further developed by Gerard Cafesjian, an American-Armenian businessman and philanthropist.

Facts

The Cascade has 572 steps. From the base to the upper platform, the distance is 450 meters. The width is 50 meters, and the height of the unfinished section is 78 meters.

The complex is popularly known as ""Cascade"" because, during Soviet times, an old cascade with a small waterfall and colorful fish mosaics was located here.

Inside the Cascade Complex is the Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA), which aims to showcase unique contemporary artworks in Armenia and promote the best examples of Armenian culture to the world."
