In the 1960s, to mitigate Yerevan's hot and dry climate, the city initiated the construction of artificial water bodies, the first of which was Swan Lake, designed by architect Gevorg Musheghyan in 1963. The lake was named after Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, "Swan Lake". During the Soviet era, both white and black swans lived in the lake, but they disappeared in the early 1990s. Swan Lake is located at the intersection of Tumanyan and Terian Streets, within the park surrounding the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.
