State Museum of Geology named after Grigori Gabrielyants

It was a geological museum in Shushi, founded in May 2014 and officially opened on September 1 of the same year on the initiative of geologist Grigori Gabrielyants. It was considered one of the largest geological museums in the Caucasus.

The museum was housed in a 19th-century historic building in Shushi, at 32 Mashtots Street, in a structure formerly known as the “Green Pharmacy”.

Grigori Gabrielyants was a renowned Soviet-era geologist, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and professor. He donated his vast personal collection to Artsakh, and the museum was created on his initiative.

Gabrielyants's gift included more than 403 samples of ores, rocks and organic fossil remains collected in 40 countries, and the exhibition also featured ores and minerals from different regions of Artsakh. The collection included more than 450 types of stones, rocks and minerals, and the oldest exhibit was about 200 million years old.
