The museum was established on the initiative of Grigori Gabrielyants, a renowned geologist from the Soviet era, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, and professor. He donated his vast personal collection to the territory of Artsakh, which included more than 403 samples of ores, rocks, and organic fossil remains collected from 40 countries around the world. The exhibition also featured ores and minerals collected from various regions of Artsakh. The museum was located in a 19th-century historic building in the city of Shushi, at 32 Mashtots Street, in a structure formerly known as the ""Green Pharmacy."" It was considered one of the largest geological museums in the Caucasus.
