The Tnjri tree is one of the most magnificent natural monuments of Artsakh. It stands majestically 37 km from Stepanakert, in the Martuni district, near the village of Skhtorashen. Believed to be approximately 2045 years old, the tree is regarded by locals as the oldest living tree in the former Soviet Union. It is a giant oriental plane tree with truly extraordinary dimensions: height is over 54 meters, which is equivalent to an 18-story building, trunk circumference is 27 meters, canopy shade area is around 1400 square meters This ancient tree surpasses in size the famous plane trees of Kos Island in the Aegean Sea and those in Piruze Gorge near Ashgabat. Beneath the tree flows a powerful cold spring, known as Tnjri Spring, which has quenched the thirst of farmers and travelers for centuries, nourished the tree, and once powered a millstone. According to a stone inscription, the spring was constructed by Hovhannes Kisibekyan, Nerses Musaelyan, and Manas Gasparyan, all from Skhtorashen.
