Tavush Fortress, also known as Tslik Amram’s Fortress, is one of medieval Armenia’s most powerful fortresses. It is located on the outskirts of Berd town, on the right bank of the Tavush River. It has been mentioned in historical sources since the 10th century, but its exact date of foundation is unknown. It initially served as the residence of Ashot II Yerkat’s governors, mainly Tslik Amram. Later, it was taken over by the Kyurikian dynasty and then by the Zakarians in the 12th-13th centuries. By the end of the 14th century, Tavush Fortress was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. The fortress consisted of a citadel and a lower fortress. Almost no remains of buildings have been preserved in the area. Today, the ruins of the fortress can still be seen on a high and steep mountain.
