Renowned scientists A.K. Maghakyan, A.A. Hakhverdyan, and N.V. Mirzoyeva founded the Yerevan Botanical Garden in 1935 on an 80-hectare area. The garden contains up to 1,100 plant species. Within its territory is the Paleobotanical Museum. The primary goal of the Yerevan Botanical Garden is to introduce unique and valuable plant species from different regions of the planet, create scientific and exhibition collections, study their adaptation to new ecological conditions, and utilize the most adaptable species for greening cities and settlements.

The plant species of the Yerevan Botanical Garden include several rare and endangered species—around 70 in total, 38 of which have been included in the new edition of Armenia’s Red Book.

Until 1992, the Yerevan Botanical Garden had a greenhouse that housed 1,260 species of tropical and subtropical plants. Unfortunately, the number of species has now decreased to 300.

The rich and diverse plant collections in the garden serve as an educational base for students specializing in this field at the country’s educational institutions."
