Mashtots Avenue is of a great importance in the Central District of Yerevan. It is one of the largest and central avenues of the city. It starts from the Victory Bridge (south) and ends at Matenadaran (north). During the Soviet years it was called after Joseph Stalin and since 1960 after Vladimir Lenin.

Matenadaran, the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, was opened on the western edge of the avenue, on the slope, under the monument of Stalin in 1959. The monument of Stalin was removed in 1962, and the Mother Armenia statue was erected there in 1967.
