Museum

The House-Museum of Perch Proshyan is located in the heart of Old Ashtarak, at the crossroads leading to the Karmravor, Tsiranavor, and Spitakavor churches, near the old bridge over the Kasagh River. Armenian classical writer Perch Proshyan was born on June 15, 1837, in the city of Ashtarak. The museum was founded on May 16, 1948, in the very house where the renowned writer was born. Initially, the museum included only the bread-baking room and two small rooms of the Proshyan family house. Later, in 1965, one more room was added, and in 1990, the current two-story building of the museum was constructed. The museum’s exhibition hall presents materials, photographs, and personal belongings related to Proshyan’s life and literary-social activities. Proshyan is the author of numerous novels, novellas, and short stories, and he also translated works from Russian and world literature. Several of his novels have been adapted into plays and staged in various theaters. Proshyan died on November 23, 1907, in Baku. He is buried at the Khojivank Cemetery in Tbilisi. The museum plays an important role in the cultural life of the city. Various events and programs are regularly held here.
