The design of the station building began in 1947 under the commission of the Transcaucasian Railway Administration and the Tbilisi-based Kovtransproekt design organization. The final working drawings were developed in Yerevan, at the Haypetnakhagits Institute. Construction started in 1952 and was completed in 1955. The station was officially opened on July 22, 1956, with architect Edmond Tigranyan as its designer. Initially, the architect envisioned a gold-plated dome, but the building was opened without it. However, the dome was later added, restoring the architect’s original vision.
