The Symphony of Stones is located near Garni village, in the Azat Gorge, and is one of Armenia’s natural monuments. It was formed by volcanic flows—cooling and crystallization of lava under high pressure—stretching along the entire gorge. It is also called the Basalt Organ, because the column formations resemble the pipes of a musical instrument. The formation consists of huge pentagonal and hexagonal basalt columns (up to 50 meters high), so symmetrical they appear man-made. This breathtaking natural structure hangs over the Azat River, enhancing its dramatic appearance.
