In 1967, in the heart of Artsakh—on a hilltop approaching the city of Stepanakert—a monument was erected that, in the decades to follow, would become not only a cultural treasure but also an inseparable part of history, symbolizing the spirit, roots, and hereditary right of existence of the Armenians of Artsakh. That monument is “We Are Our Mountains,” more commonly known among the people as “Grandma and Grandpa.” The creators of the monument are renowned sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan and architect Yuri Hakobyan. It depicts an elderly Artsakh couple dressed in traditional attire—firm and dignified figures—gazing solemnly over their homeland, silently bearing witness to the enduring connection between the land, the people, and their eternal legacy.
