Located in the heart of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), the Hunot Gorge is a site that brings together historical, natural, and architectural landmarks. Among its notable features are: Avan Harutyun’s cave, the Mossy Rock waterfall, the ruins of Hunot village, a medieval bridge, ancient watermills and more. Hunot village lies on the left bank of the Karkar River. It was founded in the 18th century and, by 1895, had about 130 inhabitants. The village held strategic importance for the city of Shushi. The Avan Harutyun Cave, the largest in the gorge, is located southwest of Shushi, beneath the cliffs. Near the cave’s entrance, stone walls and other structures are still visible — remnants used over multiple periods, from the 2nd millennium BC to the 18th century. The Mamrot Qar waterfall originates from a spring deep within the gorge. The water flows over moss-covered rocks and falls into a canopy-shaped grotto, creating a magical and serene scene. The waterfall can be reached by hiking through the ruins of Hunot and crossing the medieval stone bridge. The entire area is surrounded by towering cliffs, adding to its dramatic natural beauty.
