Vorotan Gorge | Old Harjis
Group hike from Yerevan to Vorotan Gorge, Old Harjis, St. Minas Church, King Alan Church, ending in historic Tatev village.
About this tour
This time we head to the Vorotan Gorge to discover the village of Hin Harzhis. From there, our trail will lead to the Church of St. Minas, after which we will continue our hike to the Church of King Alan. We will end the hike in the historical village of Tatev.
The hike is of medium difficulty, the total length is about 13 km. It is recommended to wear hiking boots and comfortable clothing, have a protective hat and sunglasses, food and water for 1 day (2-3 l), warm outerwear, a raincoat, replacement shoes, walking sticks, a first aid kit and a flashlight.
Itinerary
1 Stop 1 Old Harjis
Old Harjis is a medieval settlement located in the Syunik Province, near Tatev. It is known for its stone dwellings, scenic nature, and historic atmosphere, making it an intriguing destination for hikes and exploration.
2 Stop 2 The Saint Minas Church
The Saint Minas Church is located in the village of Halidzor in the Syunik Province and was built in 1611. It is a single-nave hall made of local tuff stone and is a fine example of medieval Armenian architecture.
3 Stop 3 The Alan King Church
The Alan King Church, also known as the Alan King's Sanctuary, is a medieval architectural complex located in the Syunik Province of Armenia, near the ancient village of Hin Harjis, on the left bank of the Vorotan River Gorge. It is situated approximately 7 km west of Halidzor village and 2 km southeast of Harjis village.
4 Stop 4 Tatev village
Tatev is one of the oldest settlements in Armenia, founded in the 4th century. It is located in the Syunik Province, on the right bank of the Vorotan River, at an altitude of 1560–1660 meters above sea level, on a high plateau. The village is situated about 1 km away from the Tatev Monastery.
