The reserve was established in 1958 with the goal of protecting beech and oak forests, pine groves, juniper woodlands, and mountain lakes. In 2002, it was converted into a national park. Dilijan National Park is divided into four sections: Dilijan, Shamakhyan, Haghartsin, and Gosh. The park is home to Parz and Gosh lakes, the Aghstev and Getik rivers, as well as several historical landmarks, including Haghartsin, Matosavank, Goshavank, Jukhtakvank, Aghavnavank, Aghjkaberd, and more.
