According to legend, the Syunik prince's wife Sopia (Sofia) built a monastery during 40 days, selling her last riches - the troops, in connection with which the name Gndevank (Gund - troops) occurred.
According to the testimony of Stepanos Orbelyan, earlier on the site of the monastery there was a place of pilgrimage. The beauty of wildlife attracted the princess, and she decided to build a church here. The artist Egishe led the construction; he also illustrated the walls and ceiling of the church.
According to another version proposed by Stepanos Orbelyan, the monastery was named after the martyr Supan Gnduni.
