According to the legend, the mountain was named after a beautiful king named Ara. During the battle between the Armenian and Assyrian troops, the Armenian king Ara the Beautiful placed his army just under this mountain, and the Assyrian queen Semiramis (Shamiram in Armenian), (she wanted to marry Ara the Beautiful, who rejected her offer) - under the mountain Hatis.
