"Abovyan Street was built in the 19th century according to Yerevan’s master plan. Initially, it extended to the outskirts of Yerevan Fortress and was called Amrotsayin Street (Fortress Street). Later, it was renamed Astafyan (or Astafyevskaya) in honor of Governor-General M. Astafyev. The street was given its current name, Abovyan, only in 1920, in honor of the great Armenian educator, enlightener, and writer Khachatur Abovyan. One of Yerevan’s oldest and most beautiful streets, Abovyan Street, holds great historical significance. The end section of the street, known as The end of the Plan, remains a popular landmark, referring to Abovyan Park, where Khachatur Abovyan’s bronze statue stands."
