Precious gems of Armenian architecture are located in Kotayk province: Garni temple and Geghard Monastery. Garni Temple is the only pagan monument that has survived to the present day and continues to attract tourists with its beauty. Next, we will go to Geghard Monastery. Here is kept the famous spear with which the Roman soldier pierced the side of Christ. It was brought to Armenia by the apostle Thaddeus, one of the first preachers of Christianity. Now it is in Vagharshapat, in the history museum. Geghard Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then we will visit Khor Virap. The name Khor Virap Monastery literally means “deep dungeon”. The first Catholicos of All Armenians, St. Gregory the Illuminator, was imprisoned here for 13 years for preaching Christianity by order of the Armenian pagan king Trdat III. Today tourists have the opportunity to go down to the underground dungeon, which is located inside the chapel of St. Gregory the Illuminator. From the territory of the monastery, there is a magnificent view of Mount Ararat.
The entrance fee for Garni is not included in the price – 750 AMD for locals, 1,500 AMD for foreigners.
